POSITION

Champlain College Lennoxville is seeking the services of a Student Life Counsellor, Indigenous and Intercultural Advisor to work on a full-time, regular position, in the Student Services Department.

FUNCTIONS

Reporting to the Dean of Student Services, the Student Life Counsellor – Indigenous and Intercultural Advisor develops, coordinates, and delivers programs, services, and initiatives that support the success, well-being, inclusion, and engagement of Indigenous, intercultural, and refugee students. The incumbent works collaboratively with students, College personnel, Indigenous communities, and external partners to foster an inclusive learning environment and promote student success through culturally responsive support, advocacy, outreach, and educational activities.

PURPOSE

Committed to responding to the diverse needs of Indigenous, intercultural, and refugee students, the Student Life Counsellor – Indigenous and Intercultural Advisor contributes to student success, well-being, engagement, and sense of belonging. In alignment with the College’s commitment to reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion, the incumbent develops and delivers culturally responsive services, programs, and initiatives that support Indigenous student success, foster intercultural understanding and dialogue, strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities and partners, and contribute to the implementation of the College’s strategic priorities related to decolonization and indigenization of the curiculum.

RESPONSABILITIES

(Percentage of time allocation is approximate and may vary according to operational needs.)

Indigenous Student Support (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) – 80%

  • Responsible for activities and services specifically designed to support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students at the College.
  • Designs, develops, and implements information services, orientation activities, and social programming that contribute to a successful and enriching student experience.
  • Works within Student Services and in partnership with regional Indigenous communities to ensure Indigenous students receive academic, cultural, social, and holistic support, fostering a strong connection to their learning environment.
  • Participates in recruitment activities within Indigenous communities and provides campus tours to prospective students, community members, and families.
  • Assists students with their transition to college and supports their adjustment to the academic and social demands of college life.
  • Promotes awareness, understanding, and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives throughout the Champlain College community.
  • Collaborates with College staff and administration to increase awareness and sensitivity to the unique realities, needs, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students and communities.
  • Provides a safe and welcoming environment where students can express their needs and access information regarding available academic, emotional, mental health, cultural, and spiritual support services.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and supports the Champlain-Lennoxville Indigenous Advisory Circle, ensuring meaningful consultation on matters related to Indigenous student success and support services.
  • Leads the development and implementation of annual priorities, initiatives, and projects related to Indigenous student support within Student Services.
  • Collaborates with community partners to organize events, workshops, cultural activities, and ceremonies that promote education, student success, and community engagement.

     

Intercultural and Refugee Student Engagement and Support – 15%

  • Coordinates and leads the local Champlain Lennoxville World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Committee and its related activities.
  • Assists intercultural and refugee students in their transition to college life and provides support through various aspects of student engagement and campus life.
  • Promotes awareness, inclusion, and appreciation of cultural diversity within the Champlain College community.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of annual priorities, initiatives, and projects supporting intercultural student populations and refugee students.
  • Collaborates with Student Services and community partners to foster an inclusive and welcoming campus environment for students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

 

Other Responsibilities – 5%

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS  

Education                   
Undergraduate degree in an appropriate field of specialization, such as; Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, Indigenous Studies, Education, Intercultural Relations, Sociology or another appropriate discipline.

Other Qualifications  
Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in student services, student support, Indigenous education, intercultural engagement, community development, or a related field.

Demonstrated knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis realities and of intercultural and inclusive practices in educational settings.

Experience developing partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations is considered a strong asset.

Graduate studies in a related field and experience in the CEGEP or post-secondary sector will be considered assets.

Knowledge of French and English is required. Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.
