What You Will DoYou will lead the day-to-day execution, stability, and effectiveness of iTel’s Engineering team. You will balance technical credibility with people leadership, ensuring engineering work is well-prioritized, clearly owned, and delivered reliably in a small, highly operational environment.
You will maintain a strong working knowledge of iTel’s platforms, networks, and infrastructure to lead effectively, ask the right questions, and reinforce clear standards and expectations. While you will not be the primary designer or architect of all systems, you are accountable for ensuring engineering decisions are sound, understood, and operationally responsible.
- Lead the day-to-day execution of the Engineering team, ensuring work is clearly scoped, prioritized, and aligned with business and operational needs.
- Own engineering delivery commitments, timelines, and execution quality.
- Balance workloads across the team and proactively identify delivery risks, resourcing gaps, and dependencies.
- Act as the primary coordination point between Engineering, NOC, Development, Service Delivery, and other internal teams.
- Translate strategic priorities into actionable engineering plans and sequencing.
- Maintain sufficient technical understanding of iTel’s systems and services to lead the team effectively and assess risk.
- Ensure technical discussions result in clear decisions, documented outcomes, and explicit ownership.
- Ask clarifying questions to surface risk, assumptions, or gaps in understanding.
- Support engineers by reinforcing standards around reliability, operability, and documentation, without acting as the primary designer or technical owner.
- Ensure engineering systems meet availability, performance, and reliability expectations.
- Partner closely with platform and reliability-focused roles to support monitoring, alerting, and SLA-driven requirements.
- Act as a coordination and escalation point during incidents, ensuring the right people are engaged and follow-up actions are clearly owned.
- Support root cause analysis and drive systemic improvements following incidents.
- Contribute to disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
- Coach, mentor, and support engineers in their technical and professional growth.
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance feedback, and development planning.
- Foster a team environment aligned with the company culture, reinforcing our core values.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and team growth as the organization evolves.
- Create an environment where engineers can focus on engineering by removing blockers and ambiguity.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in engineering or infrastructure-focused roles, with at least 2–3 years in a leadership or senior technical capacity.
- Experience leading teams responsible for production systems in operational, customer-facing environments.
- Background in telecommunications, ISP, MSP, or similarly complex technical environments is strongly preferred.
- A combination of leadership experience, technical depth, and industry knowledge will be considered.
Technical Experience & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals and infrastructure concepts.
- Practical exposure to enterprise networking platforms (e.g., Cisco, Juniper) is an asset.
- Experience with Linux-based systems and virtualized environments is an asset.
- Familiarity with monitoring, observability, or reliability-focused platforms is an asset.
- Understanding of automation concepts and a mindset toward reducing manual operational work.
- Ability to assess technical designs and operational risk.
