The individual reports to the Director of Contracts and Legal Affairs and works with her on all matters related to day-to-day, administrative, and corporate issues with legal implications within the scope of the Montreal Port Authority’s (“MPA”) operations. The legal counsel will primarily provide support for the Contrecœur Terminal expansion project (the “Project”).


In particular, this person will be responsible for:
  • Supporting and collaborating with management and the project team to achieve the APM’s objectives and overall strategies.
  • Advising and supporting APM management and employees on all legal matters.
  • Advising and supporting management in the negotiation of claims filed against the APM.
  • Providing legal opinions and making recommendations.
  • Analyzing, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts on behalf of the APM to protect its rights and interests, with the support of external legal counsel.
  • Monitoring and analyzing laws, regulations, and court decisions that affect the APM’s operations.
  • Collaborating on establishing the legal frameworks for all of the APM’s development, construction, service, financing, and partnership projects within the scope of its authority.
  • Engaging external law firms and managing these engagements.
  • Supporting the Director in managing the legal resources and contracts assigned to the Project.

Participate in the continuous improvement of the processes of your position and/or department, if necessary.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Laws and member of the Quebec Bar or the Chamber of Notaries.
  • Two to four years of experience as a legal advisor in a company or private practice, in business law, real estate law and/or construction law.
  • Experience in managing environmental issues and processes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, in French and English.
  • Ability to provide leadership regarding the development, implementation and evolution of legal strategies.
