NATURE OF THE WORK
The position of education consultant encompasses, in particular, responsibility for providing advice and support to staff of educational institutions and services in the implementation, development and evaluation of programs of study, class management and instructional materials.
CHARACTERISTIC FUNCTIONS
• The special education consultant supports schools by responding to the needs identified in the educational project and/or special projects pertaining to our handicapped students, students with social maladjustments or learning difficulties, while complying with the academic and administrative requirements of both the educational institutions and the school board.
• They contribute to the implementation of adaptations and modifications to the programs of study by providing advice and support to school teams through the school based SEPC.
• With a multidisciplinary team, they design and lead training sessions for at-risk programming components, the IEP, RTI, CASP, TEVA, etc.
• They collaborate in developing learning situations and support experimentation by delivering training activities to staff, designed to respond to needs in pedagogical adaptation, modification, innovation and development.
• They provide teachers with learning evaluation tools and guide them in the design, preparation or adaptation and modification of evaluation tools.
• They will work with a multidisciplinary team at the board level and be an active member on the Clinical Committee, as well as sub-committees developed to target areas needing improvement.
• They will work primarily with resource teachers to prepare and implement strategies and projects aimed at helping students who are experiencing or who are likely to experience social maladjustments or learning difficulties.
• They respond to management, teaching or professional staff requests for professional development in the areas of handicapped students, students with social maladjustments or learning difficulties.
• They will analyze and recommend the purchase of learning materials, equipment, software and provide advice on room layouts as well as means for integrating technology into teaching.
• They will collaborate with partner organizations by promoting the school board initiatives and abide by the Ministère de l’Éducation strategic and annual plans.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate specialty, notably teaching, special education, orthopédagogie (resource teacher training), learning disabilities and training with giftedness would be considered an asset.
• Possess strong written and verbal skills in both English and French.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Two or more years working with academically at-risk students, students with handicaps, social maladjustments or learning disabilities.
• Familiar with the Education Act sections on special needs.
• Familiar with the Individual Education Plan framework.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Travel is required throughout the ESSB territory; therefore, a car is necessary. Some telework may be required. Office location to be determined. Monthly meetings at the Eastern Shores Board office may be required.
